The Garden Centres (Stewarts - I'm a director) by all accounts had Christmas departments bursting at the seams over the weekend - the bursting was all in the direction of the Coffee shop though with nary a soul venturing into the desolation of tumbleweed alley that is the plant department.
Now the question is, has our treatment of Christmas with all the glitz and razzamatzz alienated real gardeners who might tootle along to us for a few shrubs even in November or has the market changed to the point that as in much of the USA, plants, especially hardy stock is pretty much a dead duck outside of the fair
weather seasons.
Should our lovely benches of Skimmias,
Hellebores and budded Camellias make way for yet more fake trees, nodding deer, and LED infested Gizmos. If we invested as much effort into plants in Nov and Dec as we do into Christmas would we see a decent ROI or would it be wasted energy better dedicated to Santa time?

It was refreshing to read your article all about Christmas - we live in Brittany, N. France and one of the things I love is that Christmas things have only just appeared in the shops and trees arrived only this weekend in the garden centres - it feels like people here have a much less materialistic view of Christmas making it more of the family time that it should be... love the blog.. have just started one myself www.jardinmiranda.com Joyeux Noel...
