Back in the early eighties I remember growing Marmande tomatoes and they were good eating, very productive too. Then for some reason I stopped growing them - they were a bit ugly and susceptible to blight.
It was like a flash-back to the past to see our local Waitrose is stocking them, I think from a Spanish grower and wow! - what flavour. I will happily eat them instead of apples - all that lycopene doing good things ( I hope).
I've sown seed already and with a bit of luck should have some fruits as good as those from Waitrose - but will they be? I wonder if these supermarket Toms are really Marmande or just a generic hybrid of Marmande type. I don't recall that green striping on the ones I used to grow. Anyways in a few months time I'll find out - until then Waitrose will benefit from my addiction!
The green striping looks rather weird don't you think?
The Marmandes I grow here in France are also extremely red but you are right, wow! what juicy flavoursome tomatoes they are.
